THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

PLEA FOR THURSDAY AGAIN. PETITION IN CIRCULATION. The retail section of the New Plymouth Employers’ Association are seeking support for a peltit.ion to Parliament praying that legislation be'enacted to enable a poll on the half-holiday question to be taken on t'he last Wednesday in April, 1922. The petition, wfhich is already in circulation, states the grounds of the request as beiing: (1) That the adoption of the Saturday half-holiday for shops has not been in the interests of the town of New Plymouth; (2) that after seven months’ experience we find that the change from Thursday to Saturday has proved most inconvenient for the farming community, and detrimental to business generally, and we are desirous of reverting to Thursday—fthe original half-holiday. The heading of the petition continues: “We therefore petition that the statute be amended to provide for the taking of another poll, and that such amendment shall provide for the poll to be taken over the adjoining country as well as the Borough of New Plymouth, and that the said poll be taken on the last Wednesday in April, 1922.” Four canvassers have been engaged to make the rounds'of the borough seeking signatures, and it is stated that the response is proving very satisfactory.
