THE RAILWAYS.

IMPROVEMENT IN TARANAKI SERVICES. OPERATE NEXT MONDAY. Word was received yesterday by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce from Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., that the improved train services for Taranaki will operate from Monday next. The alterations are:—The train which now leaves New Plymouth at 7.43 a.m. will depart at 7.50 a.m., while the train which leaves at 11.50 a.m. has been put forward to 12.40 p.m. The train arriving at New Plymouth at 10.48 a.m. will, under the new timetable, arrive at 10.15 a.m., and the train arriving at 5.35 p.m. will reach here at 4 p.m. The alterations are practically what were asked for by the Taranaki Chambers of Commerce, who conferred together before waiting upon the general manager. An improvement that will be greatly appreciated by the travelling public is that the early up train from Hawera will reach New Plymouth at 10.15 instead of 10.48, and the delay of the return mid-day train from 11.50 to 12.40. This will enable passengers to do their business in New Plymouth, have luncheon, and return without delay and also enable the High Schools and Technical School scholars to reach school much earlier than now. Another big improvement is the speed-’ •ing up of the mid-day train from Hawera to New Plymouth. At present it takes over foul’ and a half hours to do the 51 miles. The train will now reach New Plymouth at 4 p.m., or over an hour and a half earlier t’han now. This will enable the travelling public to do business in New PJymouifrn in the afternoon and return by mail train next morning. The new’ services will be equally convenient to other parts of the province, and are bound to be greatly appreciated and productive of increased business.
