It is reported from San Francisco ‘that five boxes of gold from Sydney, ion the Sonoma, were stolen en route. Their value was 125,000 dollars, and they were consigned by the Commonwealth to the International Banking Corporation of San Francisco. Burglarproof locks on the safe were filed off and duplicates substituted to defy detection. It is thought the bullion was landed at Honolulu, and that many are involved. The crew are under surveillance.—Reuter. Received Nov. 25, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, Nov. 24. The Commonwealth Bank confirms the theft of the Sonoma’s gold. Besides the five stolen, ten other boxes were shipped, each containing £5OOO The gold was shipped only twenty minutes before the steamer left, and was locked in the strongroom in the presence of the bank's and ship’s officials, so there is no possibility that the robbery occurred in Sydney.
