LAWN TENNIS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. THE OFFICIAL OPENING. Although the courts of the New Plymouth , Club have been' open for play since Saturday ; week, the official opening took place on Saturday, when a mixed progressive tournament was played. The club’s seven courts were In constant use throughout the afternoon, and 40 mem hers took part in the tournament. Miss L. Thompson won the ladies’ prize with 6 wins and 1 loss, while Messrs. Turner and VaU entine tied with 6 wins and 1 loss each. Turner winning in the play-off. The prizes were afterwards presented by Dr Home, president of the club. In the course of his speech the president referred to the founding of the new Croquet Club. He likened the growth of the tennis and croquet club in the past to two trees which rad grown side by side until it was necessary that one should be transplanted, so that the growth of both should go on with unduninished vigor. The Croquet Club had now “secured courts, and prospects for a mbst successful season seem very bright. The Croquet Club bad the best wishes of all tennis players in their new venture. The Tennis Club had already commenced the season U’ith 30 new players, and this increase augured well for the coming season. Dr. Home impressed upon players the necessity for making themselves acquainted with all by-laws I and rules of the club that are posted up i.i the pavilion. He also asked members to assist in running the club as economically ;;s possible. The club provided balls free *or all players, and it was essential that care should be taken to see that those used wet-.* returned after play. Entries for the club combined handicap doubles close next Saturday, November 19, and in this event the match committee h-is decided that the six top men players—Messrs. Nicholson, Webster, Archer, Griffiths, Kyck r I I and Balharrj - shall choose partners outside the six top ladies—Misses Rundle, Brewster, Greatbatch, Simpson, L. Thompson’ and Kirkby. The courts are looking well, and the two new courts laid down hare proved of great assistance in catering for the increased number of players. In addition a double court is in use on the original croquet green, but this may be replaced by two single courts, a- wm> «< <«in» ia. na.
