INGLEWOOD.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 9. The Inglewood School Committee held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. Those present were: Mesdames Coldwell. Partridge and Winter, and Messrs. N. King (chairman). P. -Glenie (secretary), and A. Kennedy. The headmaster’s (Mr. J. Thomas) monthly report staled that the average attendance for October was 24!) out of a roll number of 267, equalling 87 per cent. A report from Dr. Gunn was presented in which it was stated that the condition of the pupils’ teeth was truly deplorable, and that it was evident that parents had not acted on recommendations to submit their children to professional attention. This gave rise to a good deal of discussion, one member of the committee remarking that in his opinion it would be a good thing if compulsory cleaning of teeth of pupils at the school was inaugural?!, and he backed up his advocacy of such a step by some strong arguments, based on the known liability of the spread of diseases from such a source. “At least make them wash their mouths out with an antiseptic solution; Jeyes’ Fluid or the like,” was his minimum of proeed-
A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Miss Riordan, whose death took place on Saturday, November 5, at Wanganui, was passed unanimously. Reference was made by the headmaster to the valuable work she had done and the more valuable influence she had exercised during her fourteen years' attachment to the Inglewood school staff.
A very hearty vote of thanks to all those, ladies especially, whose untiring efforts had made the fancy-dress ball of Thursday, 3rd inst., such a success ( £4O net to the good) was passed. A discussion as to the best means to adopt to prevent certain portions of tne school grounds from being swamped in rainy weather was concluded by a decision to secure a report for the next meeting on methods advisable and cost.
The examination for proficiency is to be held in about three weeks’ time, was the announcement that concluded the meeting.
