MANAIA.
GOLF CLUB (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 9. A very successful season was reported at the annual meeting of the Manaia Golf Club, held on Monday evening, and presided over by Dr. D. B. Maunsell. The annual report showed that the membership .was 33, comprising 21 ladies, 11 gentlemen, and one junior. There was a credit balance of £1 14s 5d on the profit and loss account, and this was considered highly satisfactory after the expenditure necessitated by the club s first year. . At the end of the season no subscriptions were outstanding. The report, and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Mr. R. S. F. Craig, and members expressed their gratification at the state of affairs disclosed. Dr. Maunsell was re-elected president, and Mr. A. M. Hannah secretary, for the ensuing year, and Miss T. Elliott and Mr. F. E. Southcombe were appointed to fill vacancies on the general committee. The chairman stated that it was hoped .<? have some improvements effected to ..he links next year. There should be some longer holes—one at least should be over 400 yards. It was resolved that a 'risit be paid to the links at an early dare, so that the matter might be gone into thoroughly. On the suggestion of Mrs. Christie, it was , decided to make inquiries with a view to engaging the services of a professional [ coach for a short period next year. When the old club was wound up, a i sum of £l7 10s was invested for the benefit i of any of the members who might come ! back from the war disabled. Miss Mitchell i reported that there had been no claimants, i and a total of £23 3s d, representing the i principal and interest, bad now been paid j into the War Memorial Fund by the trustee . (Mr. A. G. Bennett). HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The Waimate Horticultural Society held its annual meeting on Monday evening, Mr. T. A. Bridge presiding over a good attendance. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The surplus from the 1920 show 'was shown to be £lOl 15s sd. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. T. McPhillips; president, Mr. T. A. Bridge; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. G. Bennett, E. Long, J. Taylor, F. Mourie, J. S. McKay, J. W. Snowden, F. H. Sutton, and Dr. Maunsell; auditors, Messrs. Bennett and Taylor; secretary and treasurer, Mr. V. Hobday.
A bonus of £lO was granted to the secretary for extra work done in connection with the last show, and it was decided that his salary be £3O per annum from the date of the last show. It was left to the chairman and the secretary to fix the date of the next show. The committee appointed to revise the schedule presented its report, which was approved. The' allocation of prize-money ; for new classes was referred to the comi mittee, and the chairman and the sccre--1 tary will revise the schedule finally. 1 A report by the ladies’ committee, with reference to alterations and additions to ! the miscellaneous classes was adopted. The Manaia Band is to be engaged for ! the show on the same terms as last year. : The letting of fruit stalls was entrusted | to the general committee, and it was decided that no ice-cream be sold on the ' ground. The ladies will be asked to take I charge of the.refreshment tent, as no previj ous occasions. z A building committee was appointed, | consisting of Messrs. A. G. Bennett, T. A. i Bridge, E. Long and J. A. Hansen, to collect data and report to the general com- ’ mittee as early as possible.
Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies, stewards, judges, officers, donors of prizes, the Press, and ail others who had assisted the last show. SALE OF WORK. The sale of work held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Tuesday afternoon by the pupils of the Manaia School, in aid of their tennis court fund, was a great success. The children went ro work with great enterprise, and. aiming at raising a sum of £l5, ended by gathering in £37. A novel idea, and one that met with general favor, was the serving of afternoon tea to business people in their own premises.
