BTBATFOBD AOEKU) Advertisements and items of news for publication in the Taranak'. Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Or dera for patters may also ba left with them. PERSONAL. Nov. 9. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., left for Wellington by the mail train this morning. During the interval of the Egmont Club orchestra’s practice last night, Mr. R. Masters. M.P., on behalf of those of the club who are not members of the orchestra, presented a silver-mounted baton to Mr. J. McAlister, as a token of appreciation of his good work as conductor. Mr. McAlister has taken over the leadership of the orchestra, and devoted a great deal of time to bringing the combination up to a high standard of efficiency, and the presentation last night, which was a complete surprise to the recipient, was a very appropriate form of recognition. GENERAL. There were two temporary derange- 1 ments of the electric lighting system ■ last night, but neither was of a serious nature, and both were soon reme died. The poll which was held yesterday on the Stratford County Council’s pro- • posal to raise £l3OO for the purpose of i renewing the Kahouri river bridge on' the Esk Road, and metalling the Esk ; Road from the bridge northward to the j end of the road, must be something like' a record for small returns. The pro- • posal was carried, nine votes being re- : corded for it and none against it. ' Of the twenty-five applications ’which ■ were received for the position of direc- . tor of the new Stratford school, four i have been asked to meet the Taranaki Education Board next week, when the final selection will be made. The building of the school should be completed in about a month, and it will be a very fine structure when finished. The majority of the rooms have been completed with the exception of the finishing touches, such as the fitting of the heating appliances, etc., and the school should be quite ready for occupation by Christmas. There will be a good deal of work to do to the school grounds, but when they are in proper order th? school and grounds will probably make one of the “sights” of the district. Following the successful formation of a cricket club in Stratford, it is reported that an attempt will be made to form an amateur athletic club there Amateur athletics have been taken up in both New Plymouth and Hawera. and the ellington Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association is desirous of hav- | ing a club -formed in this district. En- | quiries as to the prospects are now be- | ing made, and if enough amateur run- : ners are found in the town, a meeting will be called for the purpose of forming a club. The Midhirst Tennis Club is holding a dance on Friday night, and a very enjoyable evening is promised all who attend. The club’s season will open in a week or two, and new members will be cordially welcomed. Members are reminded that subscriptions are now due. Arrangements have now beer com- ' pleted for the first railway ball to be j held in Stratford, and it is reported ; that the tickets are selling well. A ■ very good programme has been arrangi ed. and it is expected . that the function will be one of the most enjoyable of I the season. It will soon be time to get your i Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers are advised to order r their private greeting cards in good time. A spb-ndid range of sample cards can L seen at Wilson Bros., Printers and Stationers, Stratford, and orders placed with them will be completed promptly and carefully.
