The small-bird nuisance was referred to by Cr. Penwarden at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki County Council, and at his suggestion the council decided to supply a certain quantity of poisoned grain free to any ratepayers who wished to avail themselves of the opportunity. It was pointed out that to be effective the grain must be used within a couple of weeks after being treated, and with a view to making the movement as universal as possible the council decided to set apart November 18 as the day on which the grain would be supplied to applicants. According to an opinion received by the Taranaki County Council from Mr. T. F. Martin, counsel to the Counties’ Association, a recent amendment to the Counties’ Act has the effect of diverting all revenue outside the rates, euch as licensee fees, taxes, and toll-gate receipts, to tile general account. ¥ The council had decided at their last meeting to obtain a definite decision on the subject, as it appeared ridings in which toll-gate® were situated would not receive the benefit of the receipts from their particular gate, an alteration which it was considered was an unfair one. The legal opinion confirmed the council’s views, and it was agreed that some steps should be taken to have an amendment of the regulation introduced into Parliament. The council i® to circularise local bodies asking for support in this question. The festival service at St. Mary’s on Thursday evening, is being by the Taranaki Archdeaconry Church Choirs’ Association, which came into existence last year as the result of a similar service held at the time. The combined choir, which includes representatives from St. Mary’s, Fitzroy, Waitara, Inglewood and Stratford, has been preparing work of considerable difficulty for some time and considering that only one combined rehearsal of the choir is possible it is extremely courageous of the association to attack such a work as Goss’ “Wilderness,” but judging by what was accomplished lass year the rendering of this big anthem is likely to be thoroughly creditable. The Bishop of Auckland is patron of the association, and will give an address at the service on Thursday. The members will -be the guests of Mrs. R. C. Hughes to tea, and will have supper together after the service in the Parish Haji.
Quoth the salesman: “I know it is considered bad policy to decry the other chap’s wares, but is it not a fact that so-and-so’s washing powder rots the clothes and such-and-such a powder makes a nasty, horrible scum?” Nothing like that about “Fairy Wonder,” the queen of washing powders. The public soon know a good thing. My sales have trebled in three months. All grocers stock it. -
