WEATHER REPORTS.

NEW PLYMOUTH STATION. QUESTION OF A SITE. An application from the Dominion Meteorologist (Mr. D. C. Bates) for assistance in securing a site in New Plymouth where meteorological records might be taken was received by tfie Borough Council last night. In forwarding the request, Mr. Bates said that records had been taken in New Plymouth for many years past, but for some reason or other had not been satisfactory. The observatories had been differently placed, and the results were not comparable. When Mr. Smith fe; tired from the domain another position had to be sought, and after making enquiries the observatory was placed in Kawaroa Park and the sunshine recorder and rain guage was taken to the residence of Mr. Dolby. This latter course was only temporary, however, and the Kawaroa committee had objected to the enclosure of the observatory though an offer had been made to paint it to harmonise it with the surroundings. As the records of the town of New Plymouth were of increasing value, Mr. Bates desired to appeal to the council to assist in the setting aside of a small site in an open position where observations might be taken permanently. So fax as he could see Kawaroa Park was really Government property, and at the present time he was anxious to save expense. He felt sure the council would do all in its power to meet the department in the matter. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) in reply to Cr. Kibby, said it was not correct to say that the park was Government property.

In reply to the Mayor Cr. J. Brown, the council’s representative on the Kawaroa committee, said he had not heard anything about the objections mentioned by Mr. Bates. It was decided to ask the park committee to state their objections to the placing of the observatory at Kawaroa.
