MASTERTON FATALITY.

SMASH OF MACHINERY. A shocking accident occurred at the Masterton Cement Pipe Company's works, on the Akura Road, resulting in Mr. Henry Rooks, a well-known Masterton resident, being killed instantaneously. The deceased, who was about 37 years of age, started work at 7.30 o’clock in the morning. He was in charge of a large drum used in connection with the manufacture of cement pipes. All went well until about 8.45 o’clock. The large revolving drum had been filled and pub into a faster gear, Mr. Rooks working® in what is known as the pit, and Mr. E. Waters on the other side. The drum appeared to get on too much speed, and commenced to jump. Mr. Rooks attempted to slow it down. He had almost succeeded in getting it out of gear, when Mr. Waters saw the shadow of the flying rim, and next saw Air. Rooks lying with his skull terribly fractured.
