PERSONAL.
Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. and Mr. R. Masters, M.P., were passengers from Wellington, by the mail train last night. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, visited New Plymouth yesterday in connection with departmental business.
• The Hon. F. R. Chapman, who, since his retirement from the Supreme Court Bench, has been engaged in important work in connection with the laws of New Zealand, took his place again on the Supreme Court Bench at Wellington on Thursday at the request of Cabinet to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Justice Salmond’s absence in America.
Appreciative reference was made at last night’s annual meeting of the Victoria League, to the splendid work done by Mrs. C. H. Burgess as president, and she was the recipient of a fountain pen as a token of the esteem in which she is held, by the members. A presentation on behalf of members was also made to Mrs. F. S. Johns in appreciation of her work as secretary. Promotions recently announced in the Post and Telegraph Department include Mr. J.i Morton, relieving postmaster at Christchurch, to be postmaster at Hastings; and Mr. N. R. Mclsaac, assistant superintendent of the clerical branch of the G.P.0., Wellington, to be postmaster at Picton. -Both were formerly in New Plymouth. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Kennedy Jones, M.P. for the Hornsey Division of Middlesex and a prominent newspaper man. Mr. Jones was joint founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror and editor of the Evening News, 1894-1900. He was directorgeneral of the Food Economy Department in 1917.
