NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. THE QUALIFYING ROUND. PROFESSIONAL’S RECORD SCORE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The New Zealand golf championship tournament opened on the Shirley links in drizzling rain, but the weather cleared later. The course was sodden, as rain has fallen practically every day this unonth. The first two rounds of the open championship were played. A feature of the day’s play was the performance of the Miramar professional, E. S. Douglas, who did the first round in 70 and the second in 76, thus gaining a lead of 10 on his nearest opponents. The bogey for the course is 80, and his 70 is the best official score made since the new lay-out of the course. He showed ah excellent knowledge of the ground, and made very few mistakes. His driving, approaching and putting were very fine. He did ten holes in one less than bogey, while non in one instance did he’ exceed bogey. He took 36 out and 34 home in the morning, and 38 each way in the afternoon. Scores are:—
TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. LABOR DAY MATCH. A golf match between Taranakt and Wanganui will be played at Wanganui on Labor Day. The following will represent Taranaki: — New Plymouth.—Johns, Bewley, Mackay, Smith. Weston, Wade, Gray, McQuade, and Bioome. Hawera.—Ryan, Bayley, Sutton, Cox. Eltham. —J. Quinn, L. Quinn, Ross, Stewart. I’atea.—Pulley. Stratford.—Wright and Anderson. Players are to travel by Saturday’s unail train, and will play a. match at Waverley on the way dowm to Wanganui. On the same day a match will be played at New Plymouth between representatives of the Hawera and New Plymouth Clubs. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. Following is the draw for the ladies’ meda? match to-day.
