STRATFORD COUNTY.
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. Thi. Stratford County Council met on Saturday. 'J he chairman (Mr. Walter) reported upon the conference with the Eltharm County Council in regard to the Finnerty Road bridge, and explained that a satisfactory arrangement had been come to, particulars of which have already been ptiblis'hed. Mr. Walter stated that all the accounts as presented by the Stratford Council were passed as correct and the whole payment had been made. CT. Jacobson stated that he had met the settlers at Taurakawa re the loan, and they were anxious that the work should be proceeded with tins year. They considered shell-rock should be got out and work on two deviations gone on with. They were afraid that if this was not done the Government grant would lapse. He gelt sure that some of the settlers would be glad to have the work on the road.
The engineer said that from what the Public Works engineer stated there was no fear of it lapsing. It was resolved that tenders be called at once for the work on the two deviations. It was resolved that tenders be called for 400 yards of boulders to be delivered on the Bird Road. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote inquiring if the council proposed to utilise the thirds due. If proposals for expenditure were not made, the provisions of section 122 of the Public Works Act would be enforced, enabling the Minister to use them. —Received. The secretary of the Stratford Hospital Board (Mr. T. H. Penn) requested that the council recommended a representative in lieu of Mr. R. McK. Morison who has left the district.—Deferred for a month. C. Relf, county cottage, Manaia Road, wrote to the chairman protesting against his cow being impounded by the county ranger, and asking for a return of the poundage fees (4s). —The chairman pointed out the council had no power to allow anyone to graze stock on the road. —Left to the chairman and the clerk to deal with. Hodder and Brown, Tututawa, wrote forwarding the sum of £1 as fees charged by the ranger for impounding three of their horses, and entering a protest against same as an exorbitant charge as being contrary to the Impounding Act. The claim in their opinion should only have been 4s at the rate of Is per mile. —On the motion of the chairman, seconded 'by Cr. Were, it was resolved that Hodder and Brown be informed that the ranger was quite within liis rights in charging the fee to the nearest pound.
