TRADE OF THE PORT.
FORTY-SIX OVERSEA LINERS. EXPANSION OF SHIPPING. The forty-sixth overseas liner to visit the port o-f New Plymouth, the 0. and D. steamer Port Lyttelton, sailed for Wanganui yesterday with a large shipment of dairy produce and meat. The cargo totalled 1560 tons, made up of 34,500 freight carcases of beef, of which 1'5,000 carcases came from Patea and the remaining 19,500 from the Smart Road works; 10,000 boxes of butter, 4090 crates of cheese and a quantity of Sundries. including preserved meat, wool and tallow. The returns in connection with the port of New PG-moiith show that for the quarter ended September, the number of Vessels entering the port was $ 47, the net tonnage being 45,892. Tha imports for the period amounted to 20,541 tons and the exports to 606(1 tons or a total of 26,601. J'or the Corresponding quarter of last year the number of vessels trading at -the port was 55, their net tonnage being 42,329 tons. The imports amounted to 27,051 tons and the exports 7087 tons making a total of 34,138. It will bo seen that although during the 1920 quarter eight more vessels entered the port than this year the net tonnage was nearly 4000 torts less, showing tliat more overseas vessels are calling here. The fallihg-off in the imports and exports is explained by reason of the fact that September quarter last year was an abnormal one, the figures constituting a record in the history of the port. This year trade has beep more evenly distributed and when one compares the nine months period with that of the previous year it is seen that the business shows .a very gratifying increase.
