Following upon a search of the cells for contraband a large number of prisoners refused to work as a protest against what they claimed was a humiliating system. Prompt measures were taken to crush the revolt. At a subsequent inquiry 130 prisoners were charged with insub- f ordination. The governor of the prison j pleaded for leniency for the majority, < because they were coerced by the lead- ! ers. Uneasiness has been caused by the discovery of forgeries of two transfers Jof £6OOO. Investigations are proceeding, i but it is believed no other forgeries exist. The stock, when transferred to i the fictitious nominees of the forgers, was sold in the market and the forgers got clear with the proceeds. The original holder of the stock will not suffer, as the Treasury purchased covering stock and placed it to the credit of the holder whose name was forged. The Treasury announces that iff holds all stockholders absolutely protected.
