DEATH IN A TRAIN.
A SAD OCCURRENCE. When Friday’s Wellington-New Plymouth express train drew into the Palmerston North station, the body of Mrs. Hannah Rogers was removed, and conveyed to he Palmerston North morgue (says the local Times). Mrs. Rogers, a lady of 84 years, was being accompanied or. the journey to her home in New Plymouth by her son. She had been staying with friends or relatives in Canterbury. When the late Mrs. Rogers boarded the express at Thorndon station, she appeared to be in her usual state of health, but on reaching the Shannon district s'he became unwell, in fact so ill that Palmerston North was communicated with from the Tokomaru Station, in order to have medical aid ready immediately the train arrived. It was not long before Mrs. Rogers totally col- ‘ lapsed, and she expired just before LongI burn was reached. The Palmerston North police took charge of the body on its arrival, and had it sent to the morgue. Mr. Rogers, the son, who is himself an elderly man, was much distressed. During the past two years Mrs. Rogers had not been medically attend- ■ ed, bi*t had previously been examined ' for an affection of the heart. Her health had not been of the best of late. In view of the fact that the deceased lady was not being attended by a doctor immediately prior to her death, an inquest was considered necessary. This was formally opened by the Coroner on Friday afternoon, and adjourned to allow of levidence being procured.
