Mr. A. A. Whitelaw, of Wellington, is on a brief visit to New Plymouth, Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., who is spending the week-end in New Plymouth, returned from Wellington by the mail train last night. Messrs. C. E. Matthews (Comptroller of Prisons) and C. B. Jordan (undersecretary, Justice Department) arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night on a visit of inspection.

A Melbourne cablegram states that an announcement was made at the Nationalist caucus that Sir Joseph Cook has been appointed High Commissioner and would take up his duties at the end of December.

A Tokio message states that the Imperial Household has issued a bulletin declaring that the Emperor’s health is unfavorable. He is experiencing difficulty in walking and is losing his memory and power to concentrate. Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., is leaving Wellington for Rotorua, where he will undergo treatment at the Military Hospital. Mr. Mitchell’s hip and leg—old war injuries—have been troubling him a good deal of late.

Cr. H. R. Harrison, of Matau, yesterday resigned his seat as representative of the Ngatimaru riding of the Clifton County Council, owing to having disposed of his property. The resignation was accepted with regret. Mr. and Mrs. J. Erskine, of New Plymouth, received a wireless message yesterday morning, reporting “All well,” from Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell and child and Mr. Peter Epskine, who are on board the s.s. Waimana, now nearing Wellington from Glasgow.

Mr. J. C. Carr, who has been buttermaker to the dpunake Dairy Company during the past year, is xetirii.g. Mr, A. Langton has been reappointed to the position. Mr. A. Hogg, of Okaiawa. ha* been appointed to the position of creamery manager at lhaia Road, rendered vacant by Mr. Langton’s promotion.

Mr. Kissellj electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, ai*rived in New Plymouth by the mail train onThursday evening and yesterday visited the hydro-electric works. It will be remembered the Borough Council recently approached the Public Works Department with a request that one of its engineers visit the district with a view to inspeciug further possible sources of hydro-electric power.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Clifton County Council Cr.. C. H. Barnett, of Uruti, wrote applying for three months’ leave of absence, as he was at present in the hospital suffering from a fracture, of the leg owing to an accident through a log rolling on him. The leave was granted, and a resolution was passed expressing sympathy with him in his illness.

Friend-s of the Rev. H. A. Favell in New Plymouth will be interested to learn that the Wellington dioceean board of nomination has appointed Mr. Favell to be the first vicar of the Gonviile parochial district. The new district, which embraces the Gonviile and Castlecliff area, was separated from the parish of Christ Church, Wanganui, at the laet session of the Wellington diocesan synod.

The Auckland Grammar Schools Board has appointed Mr. H. J. D. Mahon, 8.A., second master at the Auckland Boys’ Grammar School, as headmaster of the new boys’ school at Mount Albert. Mr. Mahon was educated at the Auckland Grammar Schoo], and obtained his degree in Auckland jn 1894. For the following three years he was assistant master at the New Plymouth High -School. Then he joined the teaching staff of the Auckland Grammar School, in. the life of which he has always taken a great interest. In 1906 he was granted a year’s leave of absence to study abroad, and took courses in English and foreign languages at Jena, Germany, where he also studied education <under Professor Rein. In 1913 he was appointed senior English master at his old school, and at the beginning of the present year was appointed second master.

The late Mr. Arthur Kennedy Blundell, whose death took place at Wanganui on Wednesday, was born at Bath, England, and was the eighth member of the family of the late Captain Hornablow Blundell, of H.M. 11th Light Dragoons, a regiment which, was stationed in India. The members of the family later came to England to live, and eventually to New Zealand, when the late Mr. Blundell was a lad. They settled in Nelson, where they were well-known in the province. In his early life Mr. Blundell managed several sheep runs in Marlborough and later joined the Government. He resigned from the service and rejoined a few years later as Fields Supervisor. He was stationed in Palmerston North, then in Wanganui for 12 years, Wellington two years and Dunedin four He retired from the service eight years ago at Dunedin, and went to Wanganui to make his home. Deceased was an enthusiastic and--popular member of the Wanganui Bowling Club. In February last he was overcome with a sudden illness, from which he never recovered. Hh leaves a widow and daughter to mourfi their loss. Mrs. Mules, wife of Bishop Mules, Nelson, was a sister of deceased, and Mr. E. F. Blundell, of New Plymouth, is a brother.
