The people’s monthly musical service at the Whiteley Memorial Church on Sunday evening promises to be of apecial interest. In addition to anthems and special music by the ehoir and orchestra, the soloists will include Mrs. A. M. Mowlem. By special request, the Rev. W. J. Elliott will deal with, a question which even agitated the League of Nations quite recently, viz., “Is Christ Coming Again in Person?” Endeavor is to be made by the Municipal Association of New Zealand to have the Motor Regulation Act amended in order to allow local bodies to limit the size and weight to be carried by commercial vehicles. Mr. F. T. Bellringer (New Plymouth), who brought the matter forward, stated at Wednesday’s flitting of the conference of tihe association that some time must elapse before the Dominion's roads could be made to 1 carry any heavy traffic loads that might be placed upon them. In some places attempts 'had been made to tax very heavy vehicles off the roads. The State of Maryland, for example, laid it down that no vehicle, which with its load weighed more than 20,0001 b., should use the roads. Should a heavily loaded vehicle be sighted it was bailed up, weighed, and the excess weight was discharged on the roadside. He did hot suggest that such a drastic step should be taken in New Zealand, but the local bodies should be empowered to pass regulations dealing with the problem. That local bodies should be required to provide a sinking ffrind to all loans raised under the provisions of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913, was urged by Mr. F. T. Bellringer (New Plymouth), when speaking at the conference of the Municipal Association on Wednesday. “We should carry our own burdens,” said Mr. Bellringer, “and not leave to posterity obligations from which they will obtain no advantage.” Mr. Bellringer remarked that his council was paying interest on a loan raised 40 years ago for street formation and municipal buildings. The streets concerned had been reconstructed several times, and the municipal buildings had changed hands. Had former councils set up a sinking fund to meet the loan at a time when money was cheap there would be no necesflity to go on paying interest now. The conference agreed with the views of Mr. Bellringer, and carried a remit accordingly. Further evidence on behalf of the prosecution was given in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when hearing was resumed of the charge against Sydney W. Fincham (Mokau) of forging an order for liquor. Witnesses were called to identify the handwriting 'of Fincham, evidence being given by Constable Blaikie ("Mohan) and R. Fairweather (Waitara). At the conclusion Hie Worship (Mr. A. W. Mowlem) said that, subject to what counsel for the accused had to, say, it appeared to him that a prima faeie case had been made out. Mr. Quilliam, who appeared on behalf of Fincham, intimated that he had nothing further to say. In response to the formal enquiry, Fincham pleaded not guilty. He was committed for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court in New Plymouth, commencing on December 1. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £lOO and two sureties of .£lOO each, or one of £2OO.
