The ladies’ New Zealand golf cham- ? pionship meeting opened to-day, at the Heretaunga links, in beautiful weather, with the course and greens in perfect order and the arrangements excellent. The first and second rounds of the championship were played to-day. Results: First Round. Miss Mantill (Wellington) beat Mrs. j Godby (Christchurch), 8 and 6. Second Round. Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton) beat Miss Brewster (New Plymouth), 7 and 5. Mrs. McLean (Hawera) beat Miss Cotterill (Christchurch), 5 and 3. Miss Wright (Timaru) beat Mrs. Stringer (Feilding), 8 and 7. Miss Snodgrass (Westport) beat Miss Helmore (Christchurch), 8 and 7.
Miss Nolan (Poverty Bay) beat Miss Green (Christchurch), 6 and 4. Mrs. McCarthy (St. Clair) beat Miss Donner (Poverty Bay), 4 and 2. Mrs. Marchbanks (Wellington) beat Mrs. Weston (Wellington), 1 up. Next Tuesday a ladies’ foursome will be played, and partners and opponents will be drawn for. Entries close on Saturday. Members are reminded that they must not trespass on Mr. Sampson’s cultivated area for the purpose of recovering balls. Mr. Sampson has kindly agreed to deliver any balls that he may find to the caretaker, to whom the loss should be reported.
