EFFICIENCY OF TEACHERS.
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Te Awamutu, Last Night. Speaking at the opening a new school at Te Awamutu to-day, the Hon. C. J. Parr referred to the proposal of a well-known educationist that examinations by inspectors should be abolished, with the substitution of a system whereby each teacher should examine his own pupils. If, said the Minister, they had a universal perfect teacher and* a hard working pupil, perhaps it would be possible, but he considered the abolition of the formal examination by an inspector would, in actual circumstances, be a misfortune. Unfortunately more than half the teachers in the Dominion were not as efficient as they should be, thus largely defeating the proposal.
