HON. A. M. MYERS.

RESIGNS HIS SEAT. BY-ELECTION NECESSARY. ■ ■ i. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Oet. 3. The Hon. A. M. Myers has forwarded hie resignation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives owing to h’s doctor’s advice. The effects sustained by Mr. Myers’ recent fall from a tramcar render this course necessary. Further, for personal reasons he must live in London at the end of next year. THE BY-ELECTION. A REFORM CANDIDATE. Auckland, Last Night. Mr. Clutha Mackenzie 'has definitely announced that he will contest the Auckland East seat in the interests of the Reform Party. The Hon. Mr. Myers waj» first elected as an Independent Liberal to the House at a by-election following the death of Mr. F. E. Baume in 1910. Mr. Myena soon showed considerable ability as a politician, and for over a decade he has given his best services to his country, and his resignation will be widely regretted not only by Liberals but by Reformers, who regarded him as one of the ablest members of the Opposition. Mr. Myers has consistently endeavored to be a coristructive member of the House, and he has displayed a power of analysis of the country’s affairs along sound lines, which too few members of Parliament possess. Tho House loses one of its most valuable member at a time when the best men in the country are wanted. It is to Be hoped that the by-election will provide Auckland East with a member as energetic and as keen for the country’s welfare as the gentleman who unfortunately has had to relinquish his position. Mr. Myers has been most generous in his endowments and gifts to Auckland City, and altogether he has shown himself to bu one of the Dominion’s most public-spirited citizens.
