TURF TOPICS.
(By “Moturoa”.) Napier Park races to-day. Hawke’s Bay races on Wednesday. Waverley weights should appear on Thursday. Scotch Mixture should start favorite in the Trial Handicap at Napier. Stylish Lady appears to be very leniently treated at Greenmeadows. Don’t drop Sasanof. He finished right up fifth in the Avondale Cup. Hyjinas is coming on with every gallop, and will win a hurdle race soon. “Tartar” Julian trains Lady Lois (Lucullus—Perseus), winner of the Avondale Stakes. Moiyneaux and Golden Glade won £l6OO in stakes at Avondale for Mr. J. M. Cameron (Hastings). When Grotesque downed Rational in the Avondale Guineas he had to equal Merry Roe’s record (Imin 413-ssec.), put up
in 1913. The Hawke’s Bay Guineas will be a great race if Grotesque, Mermin and The Hawk go to the poet. Mermin may strip best on Wednesday. Sid Reid took Danger Zone and Still Sea to Hawke’s Bay early in the week. The first-named should win a race before returning.
The Australian J.C. spring meeting opens to-day. New Zealand representatives in the Derby will probably include Loyal tab nAQeUWa,
A good word is spoken for Mr. W. G. Stead’s Radiant Light (Demosthenes —Sunlight), who is a sister to Delight. Radiant Light won a double at Avondale in taking style, and looks like, staying, so that she may be Mr. Stead’s representative in the Oaks.
According to private advices, Hector Gray will be leaving England for home in October, and may possibly be back in time to ride at the New Zealand Cup meeting. During his short sojourn in the Old Dart Gray has proved himself a horseman above the average, and most big faorse-owners over there would like to retain his services should he elect to return.
Kiirtish, who has been galloping in his old style lately, has gut into the Masterton Cup with 8.1, and is sure to be one of the prime fancies if he goes to the post. It is nearly twelve months since Kilrush won a race, but these old horses have been . doing the come-back stunt lately, and this one in particular is anything but a back number.
The form shown by Strategy and Prince Martian up north recently suggests that Mr. A. Macdonald’s pair require a let-up before being rounded off for the big November meetings. That is not Strategy’s form, even if it is the Prince’s.
Once again Onslaught has “terminated his racing career”; “bid godd-bye to the racecourse”, etc. This time he broke down at Ashburton.
The racing that Maioha is getting is working a heap of improvement in the Hallowmas horse, and if he doesn’t win a big race this spring the writer will be very much surprised.
The progeny of the imported horse Day Come); are said to be very promising, and amongst the bunch is Flying Plane, who is alleged to be all that his name suggests. He will make his debut at Ellerslie next month.
An owner with a horse engaged at a recent meeting was somewhat surprised at the support given the animal on the totalisator, for everything it had shown in its work did not encourage the belief that it had a chance of winning (says a northern exchange). Since the race was run it has transpired that a punter was induced to invest £2OO on the horse by a person who claimed he was inspired by the jockey. As the rider concerned does not know the punter’s adviser, even by sight, it is evident tii at- the guesser’s occupation is not yet abolished. It would be interesting to know what tale was told the punter after the race, for the animal which he entrusted with £2OO was never prominent. Mr. J. Williamson has received advice from Mr. P. Nolan that Loyal Irish was \ er ? ynlucky during the running of the Spring Handicap at Randwick, for which he started favorite. The son of Absurd was going nicely at the bend, but just when he was making a forward move was badly interfered with, and came down ou his knees, his ridftr shooting out on to his neck. An inquiry was held after the race, but the evidence, although affirming that interference did take place, was not sufficiently strong to justify the stewards taking action. Latterly, however, a prominent rider had made a statement to Mr. Nolan, and it had been forwarded on to the stipendiary stewards, and there was every probability that the case would be reopened. Mr. Williamson left by the Maheno on Saturday to see the colt race at Randwick, but expects to get back by the first steamer after the meeting.
