UNREST IN INDIA.
SERIOUS SITUATION. INDEPENDENCE PROCLAIMED, relegrapn.—rresa Assn.—copyright. Delhi, Sept. 18. It is officially stated that the Malabar situation is serious. The rebellion has not been broken, and, except in the immediate vicinity of where the troops are operating, the life and property of nonMohammedans is unsafe. The roads and bridges which the troops repaired in the interior districts have been destroyed again.
Five bodies of rebels, totalling 5000, are operating at various points, and the work of suppression by the military is hampered by the rebel mobility. The troops and rebels fought an engagement between Manaarghat and Polghat. There are no details. The rebel chief has proclaimed Ernad and Walluvanad an independent Khalifat kingdom. Boat loads of refugees, each having had to pay a ransom, are arriving at Calicut from Nilambur. The Madras Government has prohibited Ghandi from proceeding to the rebellious areas.
