, SEVENTY MEN TRAPPED. LITTLE HOPE OF RESCUE, TRAGEDY IN AUSTRALIA, By Telegraph.—Pres* Assn.—Copyright, Received Sept. 19, 8.10 p.m. Brisbane, Sept. 19. An explosion, believed to have been caused by gas, occurred in the Mount Mulligan coal mine in the Cairns district, and entombed seventy miners.
About fifty of the surface hands are working feverishly to rescue them, but the superintendent engineer holds little hope that any can be rescued alive. Assistance is being despatched from Maruba.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Sept. 20, 1.5 a.m. Brisbane, Sept. 19.
Heartrending scenes were witnessed at the Mt. Mulligan mine. Relatives of the entombed miners gathered at the pithead, where the news of the disaster, which occurred at 9.30 this morning, was received. Inside the mine feverish activity prevails, where a mountain of debris has to be removed. The rescuers are working until they drop from exhaustion. The task facing them is a stupendous one, as hundreds of tons have fallen in the drive.
