DEFEAT OF GREEKS.

FOUGHT TO STANDSTILL. LATEST ATTACKS FAIL. HEAVY LOSSES. By Telegraph.— Press Assn.—Copyright. Paris, Sept. 15. A message from Constantinople re_ affirms that the Greeks are retreating, abandoning the wounded and war material. * London, Sept. 15. The Daily Telegraph's diplomatic correspondent expresses the opinion that the Greek army h<us been fought to a standstill, but there is no evidence supporting the Turkish claim that the Greeks are in full retreat. The Greeks assert that they are only awaiting reinforcements before essaying another bid for Angora. The Daily Express’ Constantinople correspondent reports:—“The Greek losses are much heavier than I cabled. I now learn they are now at least 20,000 killed, wounded and sick. The attempt to outflank the Turkish left was a disastrous failure, which forced the Greek General Staff to launch a powerful offensive against the centre, which failed. Finally the Greeks attempted to outflank the Turks’ right, and in this effort they fared even worse, owing to the absence of roads. A Turkish counter-offensive is I unlikely to be successful, because of lack of transport, but the Greeks must retreat to Eskishehr before the equinoctial rains transform the roads into morasses. MORE GREEK TROOPS. MEN OF FORTY CALLED. Received Sept. 17. 1.30 a.m. Athens, Sept. 16. A decree summons to the colors conscripts of the 1922 class, and also all to the age of 40 who acquired Greek nationality since January 1.
