WAITARA.

The Clifton Football Club are making preparations for their annual ball.
Constable Lapouple is away on leave for a week, and Constable Hadler, of Fitzroy, is in charge. The oil launch .Mahoe has made two trips to Mokau lately, but on each occasion has been unable to cross the bar, and has had to return to Waitara.
The circumstances concerning the death of a Maori, who was lost over the Waitara wharf, still remains a mystery. The authorities do not appear to be satisfied, and are still investigating the matter. The relatives, I understand, state that deceased left home with a roll of notes, which were not found on the bodv.
The Waitara Harbor Board staff are busy in repairing the north wall at the entrance to the . Waitara River, and have done good work. Mr. Flint, the new general manager, for Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons’ works in New Zealand, arrived by the Corinthic from London on Monday last.
Mr. Leo Cox-, guard at the local station for the past three and a half years, has been transferred to Marton. He is succeeded by ’ Guard Davidson, from Marton.
Mr. G. Croll, the supervising engineer to Messrs. Borthwick and Sons, is on his periodical visit to the local works.
