TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES.

By Telegraph.—Press Asseeietioa. Christchurch, Last Night. I Mr. George F. Hendry, chief sub-editor of the Sun, was found hanging in the lavatory at his residence at Beckenham at 5.30 this evening. He left the office at

4 p.m. in normal health. Deceased was a single man, and a native of Mosgiel. He was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, and started journalism in Dunedin, afterwards being on the New Zealand Times and the Auckland Herald. He joined the Sun as a reporter on its inception in 1913.

Mr. Hendry was one of the best known young journalists in New Zealand, and the tragic circumstances of his death will be a shock to his many friends. Still in his early thirties, his rise in journalism has been rapid. He was a senior reporter on the Auckland Herald, and then left daily newspaper work to become art editor of the Auckland Weekly News, a position he filled with marked ability for a number of years. Feeling the call of the fascination of daily paper work, he joined the Christchurch Sun when it was established. He soon became chief reporter and then a sub., eventually filling the chief sub.’s chair, from which he released an influence that has made the Sun one of the brightest papers in the Dominion.
