A private cable message states that Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward leave England for 'New Zealand early next month. —Press Association.

Mrs. William Nelson, who was a daughter of the late Bishop William Williams, died at Tomoana, Hawke’s Bay, on Sunday night. Mr. E. P. Webster, secretary of the Taranaki Jockey Club, leaves at the end of this month on a holiday to Australia. Mr. Webster, during his trip, hopes to see the Melbourne Cup race. Mr. G. A. Adlam has disposed of his property at Oakura and purchased a house in New Plymouth, whither he will remove about the end of this month.

The death of Sir John Bramston, who was Assistant Under-Secretary for State for the Colonies from 1876 to 1897, is announced in a cable from London. Sir John was in his 89th year. Mr. W. Newton (Conciliation Commissioner), of Wellington, who presided ed at a sitting of the Council in New Plymouth yesterday, returns to Wellington by this morning’s express. A London message states that the following have passed the examinations of the Institute, of Actuaries: —R. W. Lavery (Wellington), part 1, section B, also C. Gostelow (Wellington), part 3 section .A. Both are in the New Zealand Friendly Societies’ section of the civil service.

An Auckland message reports the death of Mr. Bartholomew Kent, aged 71. He retired last June from the position of manager, in Auckland, of the Alliance Assurance Company. He was five times president of the Chamber of Commerce, and took a keen interest in public affairs, sport and music.
