HOCKEY
THE NORDEN CUP. RETAINED BY TARANAKI. WAIRARAPA DEFEATED, The Taranaki representative team played Wairarapa on the King Edward ground at Hawera yesterday before a fairly good crowd. Ideal weather prevailed, with the result that the game was fast. The following were the teams:—
Taranaki.—F. Bennie, White, Thoumine, Champion, .Nicholls, Page, Pennington, VV. Bennie, M. Priest, Foden, Frethey, Wairarapa.—Shaw, W. Bannin, L. Dixon, Livingston, Neilson, Hauley, Riggs, Nyhan, Foster, Tumiecliffe, Goodwin.
From the bully-off the home teamattacked, and had Wairarapa defending their goal, but by good defensive play the ball went out in the neutral zone. Soon after Wairarapa attacked, and for a brief period Taranaki were in difficulties, but Bennie relieved the situation, and by a good forward rush the ball was carried in front of Wairarapa’s goal, from where Priest hit a good goal. Encouraged by their first score, Taranaki forced the pace, and the visitors, were kept busy defending their goal. Several shots at" goal failed. From a j short passing rush Frethey scored Taranaki’s second goal. The visitors carried, play into Taranaki’s ground, where Livingston essayed a shot at goal, but just missed. ’Taranaki returned to fhe attack. and after fast and exciting play in mid-field W. Bennie, carried the hall within striking distance, and scored. Taranaki were attacking hard in front of Wairarapa’s citadel when the whistle sounded half-titne with the score: Taranaki 3, Wairarapa 0. Or. changing over Wairarapa set up a strong combined attack. From good play Foster scored the visitors’ first goal. The Taranaki forwards started a good concerted attack, and after hard play in front of their goal, Priest’s snot i at goal missed. Both sides were now I putting in fast and expert play, and j Wairarapa missed scoring several times i by a narrow margin. The ball went out ; at mid-field. The Taranaki forwards i started a good passing bout from which { Foden scored. Taranaki 4, Wairarapa 1. I Several Taranaki players were, penalised for off-side play and “sticks.” Both , sides took part in an interchange of very accurate hitting, and the ball travelled up and down the field in quick succession. Hard play was taking place in mid-field when the whistle sounded time.
Messrs. A. J. Fisher and D. Burgess acted as referees.
LADIES’ MATCH. TARANAKI (8) v. COMBINED TEAMS (3). The Taranaki representative team played a match with a team comprising players from various clubs rn South Taranaki. The following scored for Taranaki: G. Hendrickson (3), Kn&pman (2), C. Reid (2), and M. Ki veil (1). For the combined team R. Page. D. Machin and Knight notched one each.
