WELLINGTON’S UNEMPLOYED.
' NO GOVERNMENT HELP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 2. A deputation of Wellington members of Parliament interviewed Sir Francie Bell and. the Hon. J. G. Coates regarding unemployment in Wellington. The deputation stated that the money granted to the city council for the relief of unemployment had all been expended, and some 140 men had now to be discharged. They asked if the Government could give financial assistance to find, work for unemployed. Sir Francis Bell eaid he fully realised the position in Wellington, but could not d.o more for Wellington than for other centres. He had similar requests from Dunedin, Christchurch and Gisborne. The Government was spending £300,000 monthly on public works, which was a big sum, even for normal times, and could not possibly promise to do more. It had great difficulty in meeting the financial demands at the present time, when little revenue was coming in. The only course wgs for local bodies to combine, os had been done in other places, and. for the public to do their part.
