REACTION IN GERMANY.

SERIOUS POSITION' IN BAVARIA. GOVERNMENT DEFIED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 1. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Chronicle states that the police have prohibited the reactionary parties’ e proposed celebrations of the anniversary of Sedan, which would simply have been used for reactionary propaganda, and in the present atmosphere would undoubtedly have been provocative of a reaction. The reaction is now blackest in Bavaria, where the Central Government’s decrees are being challenged and ignored. Suspended Munich newspapers are still appearing. Prussian reactionaries may yet stake all their hopes on Bavaria, where there is a reactionary majority in the Lantag, and urge a trial of strength against the Central Government. BAVARIA GIVES TROUBLE. A DANGEROUS POSITION. Received September 3, 1.10 a.m. Berlin, September 1. The police have prohibited Pan-Ger-man celebrations of the anniversary of Sedan. Trouble between Bavaria and the Imperial Government Is threatened as a result of the latter's measures for the protection of the Republic. Martial law has already been abolished in Central Germany and East Prussia, but there is talk at Munich of convoking the Diet to repel the encroachment on Bavaria’s autonomy if the abolition of martial law is extended to Bavaria. The newspaper Lokalanzeiger has been suspended for a fortnight.
