The Morning Post’s Alexandria correspondent reports that the Native Press states that Britain is demanding £25,000,000 as Egypt’s share of the war expenses. The Egyptian delegation admitted the claim in principle.
A COURT-MARTIAL SENTENCE. London, August 31. A court martial at Galway sentenced two “black and tans” to ten years’ penal servitude for breaking into a house and compelling two men lodgers to walk naked amongst broken bottles. RETRENCHMENT AVERTED. Received September 1, 9.50 p.m. Capetown, August 31. In connection with the Government’s retrenchment proposals the railway administration announces that instead of discharging men, except a number of temporary employees, it is intended to introduce short time in the workshops, reducing the hours to 43$ weekly, with a corresponding reduction in pay. AMERICAN PICTURE TRUST. Washington, Sept. 1. The Federal Trade Commission charged the famous players, the Lasky Corporation, which is a cinema combination, with violation of the anti-trust law, and also with an alleged violation of the Act against' unfair trade practices. Eleven other individuals and corporations are cited as respondents in a formal step to break the alleged motion picture trust. The corporation was given a month in which to reply to the charges. GERMANY’ AND ITALY TRADING. • Rome, August 31. A commercial agreement between Germany and Italy has been signed for nine months. SHACKLETON’S EXPEDITION. London, August 31. The Air Ministry has accepted Sir Ernest Shackleton’s offer during the Quest’s voyage to carry out jinvestigations in the upper air, with h view to future assistance to aerial navigation. LIQUOR SMUGGLING. New York, Sept. 1. The Government has started a new campaign against liquor smuggling at Atlantic ports and from the West. Indies. Scores of prohibition agents have been sent to New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore and Florida cities in an attempt to break up the smuggling gang.
