THE PRICE OF BUTTER.

AN INCREASE POSSIBLE.

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Wellington, Sept. 1.

The payment of the butter subsidy by the Government terminated yesterday, and at the same time the Order-in-Couneil, limiting the retail price of butter to 2s 3d per pound for cash over the counter and 2s 5d for 'booked sales, was lifted. The position now therefore is that factories, wholesalers and retailers are free to decide for themselves what shall be charged for it on the local market. They are free of all restrictions, and it is announced that factories are going to advance the price of butter for the Wellington market by 2d per pound.
