MATERNITY MORTALITY.
RESULT OF INVESTIGATION. • DRASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS.” The committee appointed by the Minister of Public Health (Hon. C. J. Parr) to investigate the question of mortality in maternity cases in New Zealand, has prepared a draft report which will be ready for submission to the Board of Health shortly. The committee is making some drastic recommendations for the control and improvement of maternity hospitals, and the strengthening of the maternity nursing service.
Medical men from various parts of New Zealand have been consulted, and while, generally, they do not suggest that New Zealand's conditions are abnormal, they agree in the belief that measures can be devised for reducing the rate of maternal mortality, and, at the same time, of giving the babies a better start in life. Some of the measures that have been recommended by the doctors have been anticipated by the Child Welfare Department.
