GERMANY’S PERIL.
EXTREME TENSION EXISTS.
FEARS OF TROUBLE. DISPLAY BY SOCIALISTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 31, 10.20 p.m. Berlin, August 30. Extreme tension exists on the eye of a massive demonstration by the Socialists and trade unionists to-morrow. It is also announced that the Communists will take part. The Government is most apprehensive.
Reactionary societies have announced that they will not be responsible for bloodshed and civil war if the Government fails to prevent the demonstration. Elaborate police precautions are being taken in pursuance of the Government decree. Eight reactionary newspapers have been suspended for a fortnight.—Times Service. MURDER OF ERZBERGER. YOUTH’S PARENTS ARRESTED. Received August 31, 10.20 p.m. Berlin, August 30. The police have arrested the parents of a youth named Hirchfield, who attempted to assassinate Herr Erzberger in January, 1920, because they refuse to disclose the whereabouts of their son, who was admitted to parole from prison a few months ago. His appearance answers the description of one of Erzberger’s assassins.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. AN ATTACK OF NERVES. London, August 30. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that all Germany has got an attack of nerves, and the Cabinet has probably been infected, but Sunday’s proceedings at Potsdam seem to p-ove that the dangers have been exaggerated. The town was set on fire by explosives from both political extremes, reactionaries and Socialists, but the only blood shed flowed in a personal affray not connected with the plans of either side.
It is evident that people on both sides are anxious to avoid physical conflict, and the only serious trouble can be provoked by the Right, which could profit by nothing short of a successful coup d’etat. EXPULSION OF MONARCHISTS. Paris, August 30. According to the Matin’s report from Berlin, it is proposed to issue a decree expelling the Hohenzqllerns, also Generals Ludendorff. Von der Goltz, and Lettow von Vofbeck. all of whom, it de-’ dares, have compromised themselves with Monarchist demonstrations.
