CANCER RESEARCH.
NOT PRACTICABLE IN NEW
ZEALAND.
By Telegraph—’’-ess Association
Wellington. August 27. It has been suggested lately that New Zeeland ought to undertake some research into the cause of cancer, and not merely to await the result of researches in other countries. The Minister of Health referred this question to the head of the Health Department for a report as to whether research was being under, taken in New Zealand, and, if not, whether research was desirable.
Dr. Velintine has replied, and states that no special research is being undertaken in New Zealand. He pointed out that the increased prevalence of cancer is world.wide, and not confined to New Zealand. The Department is fully alive to the seriousness of the matter and is keeping in close touch with the Imperial Cancer Fund Committee in London. and with other research organisations. Special research in New Zealand does not seem practicable. The community'is not large enough to provide clinical material for thorough research, and cannot give the facilities for the close co-operation of experts in the various branches of research. The advances in treatment are being/watched carefully.
