TARANAK! IRONSAND.

EXPERIMENTS IN ENGLAND. GOOD ARTICLE PRODUCED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August 21. One of the clrief objects of Mr. Mas- a eey’a visit to Darlington was to witness | experiments in smelting Taranaki ironsand at Summerson’s works. The Government engaged Mr. Harbord, an eminent metallurgist, to report on the series of experiments. Mr. Evan Parry accompanied Mr. Mafiftcy. The system is an electric furnace with a hearth of dolomite. The great heat is sufficient to liquefy the titanic acid, which consequently does not choke the furnace. Iron and steel of high quality are produced. It is oaid that if electricity is obtainable at one-ten.th of a penny per unit, or £3 for each horse-power per annum, the electric system will be commercially payable.
