PERSONAL.

The death took place on Friday at Hawera of a very old resident of South Taranaki, Mr. G. V. Bate, which occurred somew'hat suddenly. Deceased had resided in the district for over 40 years. He was the first manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Hawera, and later became clerk to the Hawera Road Board and was in business as a commission agent. He was at one time Mayor of x Hawera. He was intimately associated with the late Sir Harry Atkinson when the latter was member for Egmont, and assisted .the then Major in his political campaigns. The late Mr. Bate married Miss Hall, of Normanby, and besides a widow leaves one son.— Star.

Mr. James Lillico, until recently for many years one of the proprietors of the Timaru Woollen Mills, and subsequently manager for Macky, Logan, Ltd., who purchased the mill died very suddenly at Geraldine on Saturday afternoon. He had gone out in his car and was talking to a man on the road when, without warning, he fell forward on, the road and never moved again. The body was brought to Timaru and an inquest opened yesterday and adjourned for medical evidence. Deceased leaves a widow, a grown son and two young children.—Press Association.
