BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. THE ’BUS SERVICE. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. T. N. Blackball, J. Brown, R. Dingle, V. Griffiths, J. Kibby, R. A. Large and R. L. Parkin. The electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. .Bartley) wrote notifying that the body of the electric ’bus needed painting, which would necessitate taking the machine out of the service for a week. The Mayor remarked that last yeai the council had to replace the ’bus with a petrol ’bus to keep up the service, and this hud cost the council £l2O to £l3O, This left the ’bus account very mudh ir. debt at the end of the year. He did not favor securing a petrol ’bus again although this was for a shorter period Decision was held over pending a further report to be made to the next meeting by the engineer on the question ol a temporary conveyance. FINANCIAL MATTERS. Formal resolutions were carried de ciding to proceed with the New Plymouth hydro-electric loan. 1921, o; £60,000. The objects of the loan include the provision of additions and ex tensions to the council’s electric light ing anu power works, either within o: outside the borough; to supply elec tricity, and to acquire plant, land, an« buildings. The currency of the loan ii twelve years (until April, 1933), at 7 pa cent, payable half yearly. The sum o £9OO is to be set apart annually as < sinking fund to be exclusively appropri ated towards re-payment of the loai. Messrs. R. Cock and C. H. Burgess werappointed sinking fund commissioners. The council also discussed in commit tee questions concerning the raising o £134,000 to meet loans falling due ii the near future. THE MANGAMAHOE DAM. Reporting on the question of raising the Mangamahoe dam, the engineer (Mr W. H. Cook) stated that in a previous communication he bad pointed out th< stresses to be met in carrying out thii work in order to give a greater heat over the tunnel. He had pointed out that the wall could not be raised witl safety in a “direct” manner, but migh be strengthened with buttresses. Aftei consideration, however, he did not thinl there w/is anything to be gained by thii method either. He now suggested tha the best means to gain the desired em was to thicken the wall from the foun dation upward, and he submitted detail ed estimates of the cost, the total bein' £3Oll 16s. Decision was deferred. GENERAL. The inspector (Mr. R. Day) reports that the present rubbish tip in Hendrj, ♦Street was becoming filled up, and he proposed to use a section in Devon Street west (Veale’s estate). —The xecommendation was adopted.
