The Times agrees with Mr. Spofforth, the famous bowler, that the decline in English cricket is partly due to the fetish for u-« googlle and swerve. Australia’s superiority is due to something In the Australian atmosphere which makes the swerve negligible. Bowlers aro compelled to concentrate on length and spin, which Is the basis of all first-class Itowling, though Australia has never till now produced a pair like McDonald and Gregory, who add great pace to these qualities. It is melancholy to think that McDonald. is exchanging test cricket for the Lancashire 1 League. The writer regards England’s failure against Australia as humiliating. She has not only failed in tests, but all along the line. Neyer before have we been so overwhelmed.
