THE DAVIS CUP. AN EXCITING CONTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, August 6. Woosnam defeated Hawkes in the fifth match, which was merely an exhibition. The score was 6—3, O—G, 7—9, 6—3, 6—3. The British captain evidently felt the defeat of his team keenly, and started after Hawkes with vim and determination. Hawkes’ strokes were wild in the .first set, especially from the hack of the court, while the Englishman played carefully. Hawkes, in tie second set, aroused the enthusiasm of the spectators with brilliant tennis, the reieree having to caution the onlookers. The third set was the finest of ail, and deuce was reached many tinges until Hawkes won the Ilf- , teenth and sixteenth games. Hawkes’ energy had all gone, however, and the dogged pluck and perseverance of Woosnam became evident in tte next two sets, which he won handily. The points scored by Woosnam and Hawkes respectively were: First set, 29—-23; the placements, nets and outs respectively were. Woosnam 32, 51, 52, and Hawkes 41, 53, In the Anderson-Lowe match they were, Anderson 55, 24, 47, Lowe 21, 25. 32,
