PERSONAL.

The death has taken place at her residence, Patea, of Mrs. L. Leineweoer. daughter of Mr. W. Ritchie, of Westmere, at the early age of 35 years. The Rev. W. F. Knowles, yicar of Amberley, has given three months’ notice of his resignation. He intends to retire on pension. An improvement is recorded in the condition of Mr. D. W. Duthie, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, who has recently been rather seriously ill.

Mr. Harry Hill, formerly of Feilding. has been appointed business manager of the Melbourne Herald. Mr. A. Wise, formerly of Masterton, is the general manager of the paper, and “Off-side” McKenzie, also of the Wairarapa, is the circulation manager. Dr. P. 11. Buck (Te. Rangihiroa) has been notified that he has been awarded by the Otago University the S. Percy Smith prize for published researches in , Maori and Polynesian technology and I Maori anthropometry. The prize was ini stituted as an honor to be conferred on I any graduate of the university who produced any original work on anthropology. The work for which the award was made was the lecture on “The PreEuropean Settlement of New Zealand,” delivered by Dr. Buck on June 27 at the Auckland institute. Dr. Ruck, like Dr. Pomare, is. a Taranaki boy, both having been born and roared in the Urenui district.
