ALLEGED THEFT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Gisborne, July 10. Charles Godfrey, carter, has been arrested on a warrant for the alleged theft of cigarettes and tobacco at Auckland in 1020. He was brought before the, Court this morning and remanded .till the 27th. SCHOOL TEACHER FINED FOR ASSAULT. Dunedin, July 18. Peter Johan Anderson, a school teacher at North East Valley, was fined '£4 and costs on a charge of assaulting a pupil named Alexander Franklin Campbell. The statement showed that accused had charge of the fourth standard on the sth inst. The. children had fallen into line in the usual manner, when a boy named McDonald came along on a cycle, and. a boy named Stevens left the ranks to let him in. Accused smacked him in the face once and attempting to repeat the blow, Stevens ducked, with the result that Campbell was struck and knocked down, and slight concussion, resulted. The defence, while pleading guilty,, affirmed that the boy was not knocked down, but stumbled against the wall when walking away after the blow. Accused was twice wounded ‘in the war y and since had suffered badly from nerves. He had only just returned after a breakdown,, when the incident occurred. RECIPROCITY WITH AUSTRALIA. Wellington, July 18. The Commonwealth Government, according to a statement in the Federal Parliament recently, is willing to negotiate an agreement for trade reciprocity with New Zealand, lias written informing the Dominion Government of the fact.' This matter has not come before Cabinet for decision yet, but it may be taken for granted that an offer to open negotiations will be accepted. Mr. Massey and other members of the Ministry have already stated their willingness to discuss an improvement in trade relations between New Zealand and Australia, aud the opening of the question this year will be opportune in view of the proposed amendment of the tariff during the next sessdon of Parliament.
