FIRES.
OLD COUPLE IN DANGER. A JUMP FOR. LIFE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellingtpn, July 18. A fire fraught with serious consequences to an oM couple occurred, at Newtown yesterday morning. The outbreak took place in a house occupied by Henry Frederick Norris, a retired Government messenger, and his wife. They retired at 7 o’clock on Saturday evening, leaving the fire burning in the kitchen grate. About I a.m. Mrs. Norris was awakened by fire. The house was then full of smoke, and in face of great danger the old lady rushed into her husbands room to arouse him. They both escaped from the burning building, but Norris, who made his escape by jumping through the window, was badly cut by the broken glass and was also burned about the head and legs. Mrs. Norris escaped without injury. Norris, who is 86 years of age, was admitted to hospital, and late last. night was reported to have taken a favorable turn.
