SCHOOL GARDENS.
THE CUTHBERT SHIELD. WON BY OHANGAI. The competition among primary schools for the Cuthbert Shield for the best-kept school grounds has been awarded to Ohangai this year. The sub-committee. Messrs. H. Trimble, 11. C. Johnson (agricultural instructor), and J. A. Valentine (senior inspector). reported their decision to yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Education Board. The report stated: In connection with the competition for this shield marks are awarded as follows:—For arrangement of garden and grounds, 50 marks; for care of hedges and fences, 50 marks; for experimental work, 100 marks; for teaching of nature study and agriculture, 100 marks; total, 300 marks. Owing to unforeseen circumstances we have found it impossible to award the marks for teaching; we therefore recommend that Ohangai, having obtained the highest number of marks in the other three sections, be awarded the shield for this year. Next year we hope that it may be possible to arrange that one of the inspectors may accompany the judging committee to those schools thought worthy of a visit in connection with the competition, which would get ever the difficulty of awarding the marks for teaching. Attached is a table showing the marks awarded to each school visited:
