A meeting of the executive of rhe Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last night, when it was decided that a register of unemployed soldiers should be kept in the secretary’s office. Unemployed soldiers are asked, to register their names and the employ-: firs, and farmers are requested to notify ' the secretary of any vacancies they may have. The action of the secretary in writing to other associations in reference to the representation of soldier settlers on the Land Board, was confirmed.. One new member was elected, on transfer. Jt was decided to hold a fancy dress ball in tlje Town Hall on August 4, and a meeting of ladies to discuss arrangements is called for Friday evening in the Borough Council chambers. All , returned soldiers are invited to attend. POUATU LODGE. The Dominion Supervisor, 1.G.0.F., N.Z. (Bro. W. Crook) paid a visit to “Pouaiu Lodge,’-' Whangamomona, last week and installed the officers for the ensuing term. The membership of this lodge is how in the vicinity of 60. On Friday last a team of Pouatu Lodge accompanied Bro. Crook to Te Wera and held an initiation in the evening. Fifteen candidates came forward and were duly initiated. Te Wera now lias 27 members, and the question of opening a sister lodge there has been engaging the attention of the. Supervisor. The prospects appear to be bright, and it is felt that a lodge at Te Wera would meet a local need. Kohuratahi lias been visited, and it is intended to extend the work of the Order there. Ten new members have applied for membership, and it is hoped to hold meetings of the Pouatu Lodge there in the near future. The appointment of a Dominion Supervisor is as yet in the nature of an experiment, and in response to a request made by several lodges for an organiser. Bro. Crook combines the duties of organiser, auditor, anef supervisor, and possessing as ho does a thorough knowledge of the work of the Order, together with a gift for organisation, he seems to be the right man for the position. After visiting the Taranaki Lodges, Bro. Crook; leaves for Otago on his Dominion tour.

GENERAL. .Mr. R. Masters, M.P., intends paying a visit to the electors of the, eastern portion of the electorate previous to the opening of Parliament. Mr. jack Dodd, of Broadway, who has been an inmate of the 'Stratford hospital for a fortnight, is progressing favorably after a severe attack of pleurisy. Some indignation has been aroused in Stratford at the Taranaki Rugby Union’s action in altering the arrangements in regard to the Springboks’ visit to Taranaki and in cancelling the proposed visit to Stratford. Arrangements were already in hand for the team’s entertainment in Stratford when ‘ the alteration was made known. Yesterday morning the Mayor (Mr. J. W McMillan) telegraphed an emphatic protest to the members of the Taranaki Rugby Union at Wanganui, and it is understood that similar action has been taken at Hawera.
