POWER DEVELOPMENT.
SCHEMES IN OPERATION. ELEVEN BOARDS LICENSED. PLANS FOR EXTENSIONS. A survey of the progress made in the development of hydro-cleetn<: power has been published by the Wellington Evening Post. Following are the principal works actually in operation: Waipori Falls, Dunedin City Council, 3000 h.p. To be extended in early future to 16,000 h.p., and. possibly to 25,000 h.p. Lake Coleridge, Public Works Department., 8000 h.p.. to be extended to 16,000 -h.p., with an ultimate development of 40,000 h.p. Horahora Rapids, installed by Waihi Goldmining Company, and purchased by the Public Works Department, 8000 h.p., to be extended to 10.000 h.p. Wairua Falls, Dominion Portland Cement Company. 3000 h.p. New Plymouth Borough Council, 1000 h.p., to bo extended to 6(100 h.p.
Tauranga Borough Council. Omanawa, 1000 h.p., possibly more. t Hawera Electric Supply Company, 600 h.p. There are about 20 smaller schemes, accounting for about 3000 K’.p. Definite commitments have been made for other ijohemes as follow: Southland Electric Power Board. 3000 h.p., with possibly extension io 20,000 h.p. Mangahao, Public Works Department, 24.0110 h.p. Waikaremoana, Public Works Department, 40,000 h.p., with an ultimate capacity of 136,000 h.p. An initial development of this scheme provides for 1000 h.p. to be taken by the Wairoa Power Board.
Waikato, 96,0(1) h.p. Eleven electric power boards have been licensed to reticulate. The . are as follow: Southland, Thames Valley, Te Awamutn, Cambridge, Banins Peninsula, Wairarapa, Central (Waikato), Wairoa, Springs-Ellesmere, Westland, Teviot. Teviot and Westland have no arrangements such as other boards have made for supplies of power from Government sources, and presumably they will have to develop their own schemes. The Southland Board has its own scheme.
This is by no means the end of the development. All over the edbntry the formation of power boards is being undertaken. Many local bodies are proposing local schemes, but in many cased the local dcheme will probably be found on examination not sufficiently attractive to warrant development when a larger Government development is in prospect. Among the districts which are considering the formation of power boards are the following: Reefton, Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, Dannevirke, Waipawa, Dargaville, Opunake, Otago, South Canterbury. Ashburton, Tauranga County, Eden-Manukau, WanganuiRangitikei, Taranaki.
