DISARMAMENT.
PLEA FOR A CONFERENCE. CANNOT MOVE" SWIFTLY. By Telecrxph.-'Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, June 22. According to a Washington message a committee, bearing a petition signed by 20,503 clergymen. Protestants, Catholics and Jews, called on President Harding urging that the time was ripe for calling a disarmament conference. President Harding answered that he favoted the principle but it was impossible to move swiftly. America’s steps would depend on the attitude of other Governments. The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune states flatly that President Harding will not call a disarmament conference until there is a thorough understanding, or very definite agreement, made between the representatives of Britain, Japan and America. This, despite the administration’s satisfaction with Mr IJoyd George’s statement that Britain is anxious for a disarmament move.
