EMPIRE UNITY.

SOURCE OF GREAT POWER. INTER-IMPERIAL TRADE. DISTRIBUTION OF PEOPLE. _ By Telegraph.—'Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 16. The Empire Development Parliamen tary Committee entertained the Dominion Premiers and Empire representatives at dinner at the House of Commons. Mr. Winston Churchill, welcoming the guests, said that with unity the Empire would become a Power which no other combination in the world dare resist. “We must spread soldier citizens as numerously as possible in the Dominions. This will 'facilitate the steady growth of inter-Imperial sentiment and the common interest. We must endeavor to buy in different parts of the Empire and to cause a direct flow of trade and business enterprise in inter-Imperial channels. We must improve the Empire communications by sea and air.” Mr. W. M. Hughes, responding, said that optimism was what was required. The main question was what our policy was going to be.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received June 18, 12.10 a.m. London, June 16. A hundred members of the House of Commons attended the Empire Development Committee’s dinner. Mr. W. M. Hughes emphasised the importance of developing trade within the Empire, pointing out that the Dominions between them bought greater, quantities of British goods than Japan, America and Germany combined. While trade outside the Empire could not be neglected it should not be overlooked that the Dominions were not foreigners. They rallied to the Empire’s aid during war and provided altogether a million white soldiers in the last war. The Empire ought to follow a deliberate policy of development of inter-Imperial trade and he asked members to use their influence in that direction, also towards guiding the emigration of Britain’s excess population to the Dominion* in order to assist in the development of the Dominions’ resource*, at the same time placing the Empire in a position of lasting security.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable A*sn.
