THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

PAST SEASON’S PRODUCTION. f OPERATIONS AT MOTUJROA. 4 PRODUCE WORTH £2,000,000. i For the majority of dairy farmers in Taranaki the present season is drawing to a close. There were a number of troublesome periods for the producer, a delayed spring being followed later by an unusually dry spell. Combined with the usual cares of the dairying business there was also some anxiety as to th« market, and then came a slump in tha prices ruling for stock. This, did not a fleet the dairyman quite as : much as his pastoral neighbor. The worth of the industry to the pro* vince is shown by the fact that th 4 value of this season’s butter and cheesar received at the Taranaki Producers* Stores up to date is easily two sterling. The cheese stored was 120,50 ff crates, which on the basis of one shill* ing per pound, would amount to £964,* 000. The butter which has passed into the stores totalled 152,200 valued at about £1,065,400. Compared I with last year cheese shows a falling-oil ' and the production of butter has increased, which is accounted for by ihd fact that at the commencement of thq season some of the large factories re* verted to the manufacture of butter. There are at present in store 23,00(1 crates of cheese and 16,000 boxes oq butter. The Suffolk, which is loading at New Plymouth this month, takes# 4000 crates of cheese, and 12,000 will be[ sent to Wellington for leaving 7000 crates in store. The re* maining butter will not be shipped* being retained for local consumption ii# accordance with the Government regular tions issued some time ago. Some of! the factories will continue during the winter and consequential there will be a number of consignment! arriving at the stores at intervals..
